Meet Jo Susie - 9th Batch, South Korea

Jo Susie has been active as a South Korean women's ice hockey national team player for 9 years, and participated in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as a single team with North Korea. After her retirement, she was invited to speak at the PyeongChang Peace Forum's discussion session, where she discussed with IOC Member Seung-Min Yoo and other IOC members. She was moved by the fact that 'players who were the world's best on the field in the past' spread the conviction that they can create a peaceful and wonderful world through sports with their competence and expertise as administrators outside the field.

Accidentally discovering a DTM program consisting of an MBA-style curriculum and 30 subjects, she thought that she could make up for her shortcomings through this program. In particular, she was favorable to ‘exchange’, a feature of the DTM program. “It is difficult to mix different streams of water, but it is a great thing to have so many streams meet at one point and flow as one big stream,” she explained her thoughts on ‘interchange’. In addition, “As a member of society, an exchange is essential. I believed that in order for people to meet, bond, and have true exchanges, every component, such as time, space, situation, and each other's purpose and interests, must be aligned. I also believed that DTM would solve this part and I was convinced of that belief,” she said, explaining what motivated her to apply for DTM.

Susie said that the Sport Industry subject class was her favorite. Through her professor's detailed lecture, she was able to grasp the trends of modern sports and the problems that sports are facing, and gave a group presentation based on the contents of the lecture. She said it was great to take a closer look at the challenges facing international organizations and learn about the right direction for her and other students to lead as sports administrators. She also recalled that it was a useful and interesting time for her to think deeply about the assignments given after the lecture through various discussions.

Talking about the curriculum, DTM Extra_Curricular Field Trip was also mentioned. She said that the oneon-one ice hockey lesson with Anyang Halla players and coach Baek Ji-seon's leadership lecture, which was held at the invitation of the Anyang Halla Ice Hockey Team, were especially memorable. Most of the DTM students come from countries without winter, so it was a beneficial time for the students who were unfamiliar with winter sports to experience ice hockey, the essence of winter sports, and learn about the charm of ice hockey, she said. “In addition, the Winter Olympics tend to be attended by only a few sports giants, but I hope that this field trip experience will spark the start of winter sports in the DTM student’s country in the future,” she added.

She says she likes the idiom phrase, ‘마부위침’, which means if you grind an ax constantly, then it changes into a needle. She does not tend to get things done easily, but always does her best for what she likes and wants, believing in efforts that always lead to desired results. She said that she never gave up or doubted the outcome of what she was starting out with and neither did the DTM process, she said.

During the interview, Jo Susie said that she had three personal goals she wanted to achieve. First, she hopes that the Mixed NOC Team (Multinational Mixed Team: Ice Hockey team participated at the 2020 Lausanne Youth Olympics) event will be realized at the 2024 Gangwon Youth Olympics. The second goal is to create an opportunity to support the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics with DTM friends. As a final goal, she said, she wanted to actively use her experience and strengths to show what exchanges through sports can make. Because she has experienced the power and influence of sports firsthand, she believes that she will be able to understand the field and create results better than anyone else. Ultimately, she hoped that she would become a good and powerful international sports diplomat, taking the lead in spreading the power of sports using the knowledge and expertise she gained from DTM as a driving force.
